How to Incorporate "Hygge" Into Your Fall Routine

The word "hygge" originates from the 16th-century Norwegian word “hugga,” which means "well-being" or "to comfort". The concept of hygge aims to infuse elements of warmth, comfort, and relaxation into our daily lives. With fall just beginning and the return of cool crisp air, welcoming feelings of warmth and coziness into our lives can help to ease the transition from summer.  When practiced in the fall, it has been shown to have benefits for improved mental health, better sleep, lower levels of stress, increased feel-good hormones, and improved self-care.

The 10 principles of hygge include the following: Atmosphere, Presence, Pleasure, Equality, Gratitude, Harmony, Comfort, Truce, Togetherness, and Shelter. Some of the ways hygge can be incorporated into practice include lighting candles with fall scents or opting for warm lighting. Comfort can be achieved by using warm blankets and soft pillows. Additionally, starting a gratitude journal, reading a book or playing board games while enjoying a fresh cup of hot chocolate can be different ways you practice hygge. This can be in lieu of watching television or scrolling on your phone. If you enjoy spending time in nature, going for a hike to see the change in the coloring of the leaves is also a form of hygge. As the weather gets colder outside, incorporating parts of nature into your home such as house plants can bring the feeling of being outside indoors.  Hygge can be beautifully incorporated into our day-to-day lives, such as getting a hot pumpkin spice latte or warm apple cider (any warm beverage that brings you joy)! Even simple things like enjoying a warm dinner with family can encourage feelings of connection and togetherness.

Incorporating hygge into our lives, especially as fall sets in, allows us to embrace the beauty of the season and find joy in the small, comforting moments. By prioritizing warmth, connection, and mindfulness, we can enhance our well-being and create a serene atmosphere that nurtures both our mental and emotional health. Whether it's through cozy gatherings, nature walks, or simple pleasures like a warm drink, hygge encourages us to slow down and savor life’s simple joys. So as you transition into this new season, take a moment to cultivate those feelings of comfort and togetherness, and let hygge enrich your everyday experiences. Embrace the cozy, and let this fall be a time of warmth and connection.
