Empowering Your Inner Voice: The Impact of Positive Self Talk

When we think of positive self-talk, we often think of affirmations such as,

I am enough.

I believe in myself.

I can do hard things.

However, it is more than that. Positive self-talk is a thoughtful shift in perspective and the

decision to be our own best friend rather than our worst critic. Let’s think about it: when we are faced with challenges, how frequently do we criticize ourselves

with thoughts of failure or inadequacy? What if we were to focus on what could go right instead of wrong? Can we take the opportunity to use our setbacks as a lesson rather than a reason to give up?

Positive self-talk is about recognizing our strengths, fostering resilience, and reframing our

internal monologue.

For example,

Instead of: “Why is this happening?”

Try: “What is this teaching me?”

Studies have shown that those who engage in positive self-talk regularly tend to see a reduction

in negativity and psychological symptoms, along with an increase in self-confidence.

So, how do we begin to implement positive self-talk?

  1. Become aware of your inner monologue! Notice when negative thoughts come through and challenge them with compassion.

  2. Surround yourself with positivity—through supportive relationships, uplifting environments, and inspirational content.

  3. Practice gratitude!

  4. Prioritize self-care: meditation, physical activity, playing with your children, reading a book, or even enjoying a nice cup of coffee.

Positive self-talk can bring light to the darkness in a world where external influences can

negatively impact our inner voice. You have the power to choose the narrative that guides your

life. The next time you catch yourself engaging in negativity, pause, take a deep breath, and

choose kindness!
